Therapists for college students near New York, NY
I’m a licensed psychotherapist in New York and Connecticut with over 20 years of experience, and at the heart of my bilingual practice (English/Spanish) work is a genuine commitment to understanding you as a whole person. I offer a warm, affirming space where diverse identities and experiences are not just welcomed, but honored. I work with individuals and couples facing trauma, anxiety, depression, difficult life transitions, relationship challenges, and more. My style is compassionate, attuned, and collaborative. I don’t just help you cope, I help you grow into a deeper, kinder relationship with yourself that transforms every area of your life. Life is a journey of growth, and I’ll support you to move through trauma, anxiety, depression, self-criticism, and fear of loss toward a life that feels rich, free, and truly your own. If you’ve been carrying emotional pain, stress, or relationship struggles on your own, I want you to know that reaching out takes courage, and that you don’t have to figure it out alone. When you’re ready, I’d be glad to walk alongside you. I integrate evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the Gottman Method for couples, and more. I support you to identify patterns that no longer serve you, improve communication, strengthen self-worth, and develop practical skills for symptom management, emotional regulation and lasting change. My approach also draws on 20+ years of experience using the following evidence-based modalities: Attachment-based I develop a deep, intuitive grasp of how early relational experiences shape internal working models, emotional regulation, and relational patterns, and apply this modality in a way that prioritizes our therapeutic relationship as a “secure base” from which the client can explore and rework attachment wounds. Psychodynamic I typically work with a deep, nuanced understanding of unconscious processes, relational patterns, and developmental history, applying the modality in a flexible, insight-oriented way that is tailored to the individual client’s needs. Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) I work toward deeply internalizing the cognitive model and develop a highly structured, collaborative, and flexible way of applying CBT across a wide range of diagnoses, while maintaining fidelity to its core principles of cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and skill building. Dialectical Behavior (DBT) I work toward deeply internalizing its biosocial model and dialectical philosophy, applying the modality in a highly structured, skills‐based, and validation‐rich way that balances acceptance and change. Acceptance and commitment (ACT) I work to deeply internalize ACT’s core model of psychological flexibility and apply it flexibly across diagnoses, and levels of functioning, focusing less on symptom elimination and more on helping clients live a values driven life even in the presence of distress.
Are you not feeling like yourself? Are you overwhelmed by things that shouldn't be all that overwhelming? It's often hardest to reach out for help when you're feeling this way. Many people don't seek help because of fear of stigma or they see no way out. My practice is geared towards helping students with all mental health concerns. My approach is comprehensive and integrated offering medications or therapy. If you're looking for a safe, non-judgmental space to address your needs, feel free to contact me.
Hi, I’m Kayla Cunningham! I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and for the past 10 years, I’ve been helping people work through life’s challenges and changes. College can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming — juggling classes, friendships, family expectations, and figuring out what’s next isn’t always easy. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space where you can talk openly about whatever’s on your mind, without judgment. Whether you’re navigating stress, anxiety, relationships, big transitions, or just feeling stuck, I’m here to meet you where you’re at and help you find tools and strategies that actually fit your life. I believe the relationship we build is one of the most important parts of counseling. I’ll take the time to get to know you, understand what you’re going through, and adjust my approach to what you need — because there’s no one “right” way to do this.

I am happy to work with anyone who is committed to living a fuller life by learning more about themselves. I am comfortable helping people out with a variety of psychiatric issues, both through medications and / or therapy. I am careful about prescribing medications only when necessary and prefer to minimize their use if the person taking them is on board. Sharing experiences in a safe space can heal wounds and help us grow to our fullest potential. We all have a capacity for joy and fulfillment often buried under bad experiences and layers of protection. I will walk with you on your inward journey and help you make the most of it.

You're out on your own and somehow now expected to juggle classes, deadlines, social plans you don’t even have the energy for, and the constant pressure to ‘be better.’ Maybe you’re asking yourself: Am I falling behind? Am I doing enough? Why does this feel so much harder for me than everyone else? I work with ambitious students and young adults navigating anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, trauma, and life transitions - like starting college, moving out of the dorms or from college to career, adjusting to grad school, shifting friendships, or figuring out what adulthood is even supposed to look like. In therapy, we’ll untangle what’s keeping you stuck and build tools that actually work in real life. You don’t have to be falling apart to get support. If you look like you’re holding it together on the outside, but inside you’re overthinking, panicking, or numb to it all, I get it. Together, we’ll find your middle ground where you can grow, slow down without losing your flow, and align your actions with your goals and values.
You are really tired. If you’re being honest, your head is spinning & you’re anxious all the time. It’s keeping you from being able to rest, let alone enjoy life. All you know is that you don’t feel your best & feel that you’ve been letting people down. You feel disappointed in yourself & wonder what is going on with you. I have over 20 years experience in the human service field. My passion is providing compassionate support for those struggling with life's challenges in a safe and non-judgmental environment; assisting individuals in addressing what is troubling them; whether it is marital conflict, depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, trauma, anger management, serious mental illness, etc.; helping them to achieve their personal goals; effecting positive change and working toward desired outcomes. I incorporate principles from the Christian faith for those who desire that but work with all people/faiths indiscriminately. I love working with college-aged individuals; helping them to navigate the difficulties associated with entering adulthood successfully. I am closely located to Canisius, Medaille, UB South and Buffalo State colleges. Public transportation is available: the bus stops in front of the office and the Humboldt/Hospital Metrorail station is a block away. I also derive great joy in assisting married couples in developing more effective ways of communicating with the end goal of resolving conflict and enjoying a more satisfying relationship where both parties feel valued and connected to each other in a deep way.
