Therapists for college students near New York University
Jessica Moskowitz
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private practice in midtown Manhattan. When I decided to go back to school for a master’s degree, I chose social work because I felt strongly about its foundational belief that focus should be on both a person and their environment. During graduate school at Fordham University I saw many appealing paths I could continue on after graduation. While both macro and micro levels of practice are extremely important, I felt best suited for work with individuals on a deeper level. I wanted to further my education and went on to complete the four-year postgraduate training program in Adult Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy from The National Institute for the Psychotherapies. Prior to private practice I worked with a diverse population in various clinics throughout New York City. In addition to private practice I have been guest faculty at the Training Institute for Mental Health and taught a course on Eating Disorders. In March 2020, I completed a post master’s program in Spirituality and Social Work at New York University.

I'm so glad you've started this journey to improve your mental wellbeing. I know how difficult beginnings can be—I’ve worked with a number of first-time and returning therapy clients from backgrounds as diverse as New York City itself. I particularly enjoy working with LGBTQIA+ clients and people with disabilities and neurodivergences. I do my best to honor your cultural experience as we tackle some of life’s biggest challenges together: depression and anxiety, trauma and grief, chronic illness and medical issues, relationship difficulties and life transitions, and problematic drug use or other behaviors that may no longer be serving you. My own career began in worker organizing, then moved into community social work and social policy research. I have a deep appreciation for how relationships and social realities impact mental health and prioritize a relational and social change-oriented approach. Disability justice, racial justice, and gender justice are core tenets of my practice. My work is also influenced by my own experiences as a therapy client: I strive to be as transparent as possible about what we’re doing and why, so you can be a full partner on the journey and never feel left in the dark. Above all, I am person-centered: I start by learning who you are as an individual, your strengths and challenges, and then figure out which clinical approaches can work best for you. I often draw from Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and am pursuing further training in these modalities. I very much look forward to meeting you and taking this journey together!

I work well with people who have a sense of humor, who are curious about themselves and others, and who are looking for honesty and directness when it's appropriate. Our sessions together will not look like the stereotypical image of therapy you might have in mind: you draped across an ottoman, and me simply listening nearby. The goal is that our sessions be conversational and collaborative. Much of my experience has been helping young adults manage anxiety and stress around life changes and relationships. I believe that our past experiences shape us and in our sessions together I'll ask you to draw from your past in order to help inform and make meaning of the present. In your late teens and twenties, figuring out who you are and what you want can be really overwhelming. I'm here to help you navigate the complicated feelings that come with becoming an adult. Please check out my website or reach out for a free consultation if you think we might be good fit or if you want to learn more about me.

I know that life can be challenging, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. I’m a board-certified, Mount Sinai-trained adult psychiatrist, and my passion is helping individuals like you achieve optimal mental well-being. In our work together, I combine therapy and medication, when needed, with practical lifestyle changes—like improving sleep, nutrition, and mindfulness—to help you create a balanced, healthy life. I believe that everyone’s journey is unique, so I’m dedicated to crafting a personalized treatment plan that fits your specific needs and goals. I take a holistic approach to mental health, considering not just the mind and body but also the cultural and social factors that shape our experiences. This is especially important to me in the South Asian community, where discussions around mental health can feel daunting. I strive to create a safe, welcoming space where you can express your concerns. Whether you’re facing anxiety, depression, cultural challenges, or life transitions, I’m here to help you find the clarity and resilience to thrive. Together, we can work towards your mental health goals and foster a brighter, more balanced future. I look forward to partnering with you on this journey!

If you feel lost in your relationships and are not sure how to reconnect, I can teach you a different approach to communication. If your anxiety (or your child's anxiety) is taking over your life, I can teach you strategies that restore calm and help you build confidence. I have over a decade of experience working with individuals and families just like yours, with a specialty in anxiety (including health anxiety and OCD), and relationships. I love helping clients build more peaceful, connected relationships with themselves and with others, and I invest just as much as my clients do in each session. I specialize in helping people heal from trauma, strengthen relationships, and manage overwhelming emotions. My approach is grounded in compassion, safety, and collaboration. I believe therapy should be a place where you can exhale, feel seen, and begin to make sense of your story without judgment.

If you’re looking for a therapist who shows up like a regular person, and not a blank slate, look no further. In this room, you won’t get a lot of blank “I see” or “Ahh.” Instead, you’ll have a therapist who is warm, empathetic, and (most importantly) FUNNY. I aim to make the therapy room a space where you can show up exactly as you are. That is, authentically you, whatever that looks like on any given day. We can make space to laugh, to cry, to feel what it is you need to feel in order to help you grow into the you that you want to be. I want this relationship to feel collaborative and within your boundaries. If something we’re doing isn’t working for you, tell me and let’s work together to find something that works for you!

I am a licensed clinical social worker providing trauma-informed counseling rooted in queer liberation and trans joy. I am a collaborative therapist who works with clients’ strengths to explore the behaviors, thoughts, communication patterns, and interactional patterns that are associated with the problems presented. After a thorough initial assessment, I work with clients to clarify goals, identify resolutions to the presenting issues, followed by a wide array of interventions and home assignments to help achieve these goals. I understand that people find it at times challenging or embarrassing to discuss their sexual lives and take pride in providing a judgment-free environment with compassion, empathy, and openness. It is important to me to recognize the diversity of each person and adapt my therapeutic techniques to the unique needs of each client. My ultimate goal for each client in therapy is to be provided with tools and specific techniques to master and utilize during and after completing their work with me in therapy. I am a therapist at Octave, a behavioral health practice creating a new standard for mental health care that’s both high-quality and accessible. I welcome you, all of you - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I welcome the part of you that wants to scream and perhaps doesn’t know how to. I welcome the part of you that is screaming and not being heard. I welcome the part of you that constantly criticizes you – whose voice is that? I welcome the many versions of you as a child – carefree? careful? I welcome the parts of you that are shining and the parts of you that are hiding. I welcome the parts of you that feel uncontrollable and the parts of you that you keep in order. I welcome the parts you want to get rid of and the parts you cling onto. Our work together is about inviting all your inner selves to the table and hearing them out – how is each part, some seemingly “bad,” trying to help you?
