Therapists for college students near New York University
Stephan Goddard
I've been a licensed mental health counselor with over three years of clinical experience. I use an eclectic approach to therapy, utilizing Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral, and Humanistic styles. Whether your thoughts are adaptive or maladaptive, they serve a function in your life. Through treatment, I will assist you in understanding those functions, what role they play, and how they are helpful or harmful. I believe problems manifest in how we interact with the people closest to us. Thus, our therapeutic relationship will help you to develop different ways of relating to others, allowing the healing process to begin. I'm well-versed in working with individuals of diverse races, sexual orientations, gender identities, nationalities, and traditionally marginalized communities. The issues and topics we might explore together include race and racism, sexual orientation, sexuality, gender identity, depression, anxiety, stress, compulsive behaviors, substance abuse, grief, suicide, reaching career goals, relationship problems, family problems, phase of life issues, and self-actualization barriers. I am a therapist at Octave, a behavioral health practice creating a new standard for mental health care that’s both high-quality and accessible. Anxiety, depression, and those really difficult feelings can make us feel stuck, but there is hope. Let's focus on feeling better, personal growth, and healing by looking at the world through your eyes. Allow me to assist you through an empathetic lens that doesn't ask ""What's wrong with you?"", but instead, wonders what experiences lead you to where you are now. From there, we can figure out how to get you where you truly want to be. I use a trauma-informed lens and solution-focused approach to help guide the work I do with my clients. I like to give my clients autonomy and make them feel like I am meeting them where they are. I'm a therapist with Octave and Evernorth Behavioral Care Group. Octave is a mental health practice providing high-quality care covered by multiple insurances. Evernorth Behavioral Care Group is a behavioral health provider group in-network with Cigna Healthcare and Evernorth. For my availability, please reach out to Octave’s team by emailing or calling.

You don't have to figure it all out on your own! Students I work with are empathic and intelligent and are feeling pain about their personal lives and the world at large. They have difficulty asking for help as they are often the person others turn to for assistance. Distress can show up as failing classes, procrastination, insomnia, sadness, lack of focus, irritability, anxiety and feelings of hopelessness about the future. In our work together, we will identify sources of distress, resolve conflicts that are holding you stuck, and learn, practice and integrate coping strategies. We will tap into inner resources--including intuition, humor, beauty and resilience--to access healing and joy. Our work will enable you to become more grounded, self-aware, confident, and self-directed. I studied English and Environmental Studies at SUNY Albany and Williams College. I received my Masters in Expressive Therapies from Lesley University and my Masters in Social Work from New York University. My professional experience includes over 15 years working in academia, including serving as the director of a university women's and gender resource center, adjunct professor and academic advisor, in addition to my work as a psychotherapist. I am a member of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America and am a climate-aware and trauma-informed therapist. Many of my current clients are dealing with trauma and social anxiety. They often feel isolated and struggle with initiating and building healthy connections and friendships with others. Therapy can help you uncover choices and social skills you may not even be able to imagine now. My studies in creative arts therapies, mythology, Tarot, dreams and archetypes help you see your life stories with fresh perspective and flexibility. Students who work best with me approach therapy as partnering with a warm, compassionate, knowledgeable guide who can help them access intuitive, academic, physical and practical resources. We weave together a unique net of strategies that you can tap into as needed for coping with obstacles and stressors in your life.

Life can feel overwhelming these days, and meaningful relationships, joys and values can be hard to sustain. The coping patterns we adopt often get in the way of feeling better, and connected with others. My practice fosters an empathetic environment where clients are at ease exploring emotions and concerns. Collaboratively, we address issues such as anxiety, depression and self-esteem struggles, and tackle problems such as relationship difficulties, life transitions, loss and school-related stressors. Jointly, we will define concrete goals, develop real-life coping skills and become more aware of underlying barriers to well-being. I am an LCSW (NYU) with a psychodynamic approach. I also draw on techniques from mindfulness-based therapies and trauma-informed methodologies. A former art history professor and undergraduate advisor (B.A. & M.A., Williams; Ph.D. U.Chicago), I understand the particular challenges college students face. Often, the hardest step about therapy is the decision to begin. I welcome the opportunity to meet you and explore how I can be helpful to you.

I believe therapy should be a place where you can be honest about what you're experiencing without feeling judged or pressured. My goal is to create a supportive, collaborative environment where you feel comfortable being yourself and talking openly about what’s affecting you. I work primarily with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, life transitions, and the emotional challenges of everyday life. As someone of South Asian background, I understand how culture, family expectations, and identity can shape the way we understand ourselves and our relationships. I welcome clients from all backgrounds and value getting to know each individual's unique experiences. My approach is person-centered, trauma-informed, and incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I believe you are the expert on your own experiences, and my role is to support you as you work toward greater understanding, healing, and growth. At the same time, I won't be afraid to gently challenge you when it can help you move forward, understand yourself more deeply, or approach a situation in a new way. I will meet you where you are. You are not alone.

My therapeutic style is collaborative, creative, and grounded in both trauma-informed and person-centered care. I believe that therapy works best when clients feel safe, heard, and understood. Building trust and genuine connection is at the core of my approach, and I strive to meet each client with empathy and curiosity rather than judgment. I draw from evidence-based modalities while tailoring treatment to the individual. This means our work together may include strategies from CBT, psychodynamic therapy, DBT, mindfulness, or strengths-based frameworks. I highly value your voice in the process and view therapy as a shared space where we can explore challenges, deepen insight, and build tools for healing and growth. I am especially passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and others navigating identity, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relational stress. Together, we’ll work at a pace that feels right for you, and make sure to honor your strengths and resilience every step of the way.

With nearly a decade in community mental health providing care to those who would otherwise struggle to access it, I’ve become a fierce advocate for making services available to all. Supporting the people who face the most barriers has always felt necessary to me. During my time running a county crisis program, I was honored to care for patients in distress, often on the worst day of their lives. Being present for those critical hours, offering stability and compassion when everything was uncertain, was a privilege that informs my practice to this day. I’ve worked across a variety of populations, including mandated clients, sexual offenders, adolescents, young adults, and LGBTQ+ communities. My experience spans almost every aspect of life, touching on infidelity, gender-affirming care, sexuality, trauma, domestic violence, substance use, and personality disorders — working with victims and those who have caused harm. My background includes case management, residential leadership, and both long-term care and acute intervention. I’ve supported clients with severe and persistent mental illness, as well as ADHD, depression, anxiety, and OCD. My approach is flexible. I draw from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) — including distress tolerance and mindfulness — motivational interviewing, and solution-focused techniques. I’m trained in trauma-focused CBT and offer both maintenance and deeper, long-term work for chronic concerns.

Our worlds on the inside and outside can be overwhelming, leaving us with intense emotion that is difficult to manage, understand and process. Perhaps you are left feeling worried, paralyzed, over-thinking decisions, or losing motivation? I work with patients to treat depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting challenges, as well as questions surrounding identity (racial, sexual, gender), and transitions through life-stages. I help patients face and process highly painful experiences, in an environment of safety that I strive to create and maintain throughout the therapeutic process. The care I provide seeks to acknowledge and build upon the strengths and resiliency of each individual, using a culturally-competent lens in exploring these strengths. My clinical experience and knowledge enhance my pragmatic therapeutic work -- offering an individualized approach to each patient. I would like to help you develop hope and positive curiosity about your inner life and the opportunities for growth and healing that lie before you. I look forward to the opportunity to guide you along this path!

I have worked with individuals with a variety of mental health issues, which includes depression, anxiety, and behavioral issues. I have experience in individual, group, and family counseling. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and has worked in the area of counseling since 2019. I have training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I feel therapy is a process between the therapist and client to explore and understand what the client is experiencing, to come up with coping skills that best fits them and their circumstances. I feel therapy should also be a place where the client is provided a safe, judgement-free, insightful, and empathic environment. Anyone can be capable of healing and building resiliency to a better life. I am a therapist at Octave, a behavioral health practice creating a new standard for mental health care that’s both high-quality and accessible. Learning how to navigate life as a young adult is hard! You are trying to balance the demands of work or school, family, and friends, all while figuring out who you are and who you want to be. As a driven and successful individual, you may put a lot of pressure on yourself and feel constrained by your own expectations. This can lead to constant self-doubt and feeling like you're always reaching for an unattainable (or unrealistic) goal. You may be overextending yourself to others, and not focusing on yourself. Perhaps you have negative thought patterns or behaviors that are causing discomfort or you don't always understand your reactions. Virtual therapy can help. Let's work together to discover the barriers that are keeping you from finding balance in your life - taking care of yourself and setting boundaries is not selfish!

I work best with students who feel overwhelmed on the inside even if they look “fine” on the outside. Many of my clients deal with anxiety, OCD, stress, or big life adjustments like starting college, managing classes, or navigating relationship difficulties. If you’re feeling stuck, burnt out, or unsure how to handle everything on your plate, you’ll likely feel comfortable with me.
