I am a pre-licensed mental health counselor (LCMHC-A) at Pathways to Life, Inc. in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I serve as part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team under the supervision of Britney Reynolds, MA LCMHC-QS, Corporate Clinical Director, and Vivian Clark, LCSW, Regional Director. Pathways to Life, Inc. is a community mental health agency committed to connecting individuals with a range of services designed to address their unique needs. As a Christian counselor, I integrate faith-based principles and values into my clinical practice, offering clients the option to explore spiritual concerns and incorporate their beliefs into the therapeutic process. My approach is compassionate and client-centered, respecting each person’s worldview and goals. I am trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), which equips me to support children, adolescents, and adults experiencing trauma-related symptoms and PTSD. My areas of focus also include anxiety, behavioral issues, body image, career concerns, college adjustment, depression, emotional regulation, family conflict, identity development, impulse control, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), relationship issues, self-esteem, sexuality, sexual orientation, social anxiety, social isolation, academic stress, and more. I believe in the power of healing through humor and strive to create a welcoming, genuine environment where clients feel safe to show up authentically. It is important to me that each session is a space where you can be yourself, express vulnerability, and build trust. I am committed to providing evidence-based care that fosters personal growth, emotional healing, and holistic well-being, whether clients seek support for mental health, spiritual concerns, or trauma recovery.
Hello, I'm Joanna, and I have been in private practice since 2010. I specialize in trauma, grief and bereavement, and support for those with a chronic or terminal illness, their family members, and their caregivers. I have experience with LGBTQQIA+ patients, Veterans and Active Duty, and I am Kink Aware. I'm a military brat, and the wife of a Veteran, so moving, change, and being the "new person" in many situations is something I have experienced for most of my life.
In addition to my private practice, I also work at a university counseling center, which keeps me in tune and up to date on what today's college students are experiencing. I've worked with both traditional and non-traditional students throughout my career and enjoy helping students get back on their path to success. Many of the students I help are struggling with anxiety, depression, academic concerns, or family/relationship issues. My clients enjoy having a non-biased person to support them as they become more independent and explore who they are as a person. College is an exciting time, but can also be stressful and overwhelming. As human beings, we don't like change, and going to college means a lot of changes happening at once...again, exciting, but also scary! I help my clients learn the skills needed to feel capable, resilient, an ultimately successful in both their academic and personal life.
Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed by the challenges and circumstances in your life? Have you experienced feelings of loneliness, depression, anxiety, sadness, or a lack of support when you needed someone to confide in? I understand these struggles, and I want you to know that it's perfectly okay to not be okay. I'm here to provide you with the tools and strategies you need to break free from negative thought patterns and self-defeating behaviors. Similar to regular physical check-ups, therapy serves as a preventive measure, equipping you with effective strategies to navigate moments of chaos, uncertainty, and everyday life. Together let's transform emotions, behaviors, and thought patterns for your desired outcomes. I support young adults, college students, and adults particularly those from BIPOC communities, facing depression, anxiety, and life transitions. My aim is to empower you, raise your self-awareness, and break down the barriers of mental health stigma. The first step is daunting yet essential. Therapy isn't weakness; it shows strength and courage to seek support. My priority is a nonjudgmental, safe space where you can freely express yourself. Remember, progress begins with putting one foot in front of the other, and soon enough, you'll be walking towards a brighter future.

In session I am present-focused, transparent, and relational. My approach is rooted in trust and collaboration. I value authenticity, and bring myself into our sessions. I offer tools and techniques designed to connect your thoughts to your emotions, then creating action. I have developed a robust set of resources that are available to all of my clients. I am an advocate for healthy manhood and a proponent of simple living. I carry a strong connection to the outdoors. My therapeutic support dog, Joe, may be a part of our sessions. I practice via telehealth in NY, NC, WA, and TX. I specialize in working with adult men and women who may look fine on the outside, but inside you're struggling to get your own needs met, self-doubt, perfectionism, and shame. Gestalt Therapy goes beyond looking only at the cognitive, linear perspective of the person. It demands of the therapist an awareness of the body and how it manifests in the psyche. Through its focus on process rather than content, the patient gains an experiential awareness of how they do what they do and new choices emerge spontaneously. The radical focus on process in Gestalt creative therapy keeps the work alive and full of possibility for both the patient and for my work as a therapist. Melissa Bennett-Heinz obtained her master’s degree in clinical social work from Columbia University (Class of 2002) and is a graduate of Gestalt Associates for Psychotherapy in New York City, NY. In addition to her background in Gestalt Therapy, she obtained her bachelor's and master’s degrees from the esteemed conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, in New York City, where she majored in Oboe Performance. Melissa completed cognitive behavioral studies under the tutelage of Dr. William Sanderson. She is a licensed clinical social worker in NY, WA, NC, and TX and has over twenty years of specialized training and experience in PTSD, childhood abuse, mood and anxiety disorders. Melissa brings her background as a classical musician and deep spirituality together in her unique approach in Gestalt's creative and experiential therapy.
