Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Therapy should feel like an exclusive experience. It should not be a cookie cutter or one size fits all process. As your partner, I will be there every step of the way, challenging you to grow, while at the same time helping you to honor the person you have always been. I believe in fostering a non-judgmental and safe space for clients to express themselves and explore difficult feelings. I have been working in mental health and providing psychotherapy for over a decade, and am passionate about helping others. I consider myself an active therapist, combining experience, education, creativity and sense of humor with a realistic approach to counseling.
Hi! I'm Bernadette and I am a licensed clinical social worker and I received my MSW from Columbia University. I use a variety of clinical modalities rooted in CBT, EMDR, motivational interviewing and problem solving therapy. I have experience in working with issues related to anxiety, depression, self-esteem, loss and grief, life transitions, interpersonal conflict, poverty, sexuality and gender, and stress management. My approach to therapy is guided by the firm belief that the strength of the therapist-client relationship is the most important element of successful treatment. Together, we will navigate the obstacles through a foundation of trust, transparency and maybe even some humor. I enjoy working with motivated clients who are seeking to make positive changes in their lives and I am committed to making this process as supportive as possible. I am committed to decreasing the barriers to mental health services and due to this, my practice is 100% virtual. Having this option allows us to build a strong therapeutic relationship where we are actively working on both short and long terms goals each time we meet. I will offer you real feedback rather than silent nods!
For many queer, non-binary, and trans people, grief is not always recognized or supported. There is no casserole, no card. This may include family lost after coming out, a faith community that turned away, the loss of a beloved pet, grief related to sexuality or intimacy, or the changes brought by chronic illness. Some may also be carrying grief connected to earlier trauma that was never fully acknowledged. Unrecognized grief can be especially isolating. You may find yourself carrying something real and significant that others have overlooked or questioned. Therapy offers a place where this grief can be tended with care. I offer LGBTQ+ centered grief therapy online in Georgia and New York. Because grief is not a problem to solve, my approach is compassionate, steady, and unhurried. I pay particular attention to relationships and losses that were real, even if others didn’t see them that way. I support clients through losses that often go unrecognized. As a lesbian therapist, I understand what it can mean to grieve without witness. I specialize in losses that go unseen and am especially drawn to supporting LGBTQ+ elders navigating aging, caregiving, and loss. Reaching out can feel vulnerable. If you're looking for a place where your grief can be acknowledged and supported, I am here when you are ready.
I believe each of us has our own unique strengths, needs, and personality. I have worked with a wide variety of people who present with a wide range of personal struggles (anxiety, depression, bipolar, ADHD, etc.). I have found that by being my true self, it allows others the space to do the same. I will incorporate various therapeutic techniques depending on your personal goals and comfort level. My goal is to empower you while fostering self-awareness, emotional growth, and positive change. 'The path to self-discovery is not a straight line. It's a zigzag." By Alicia Keys.
Evolutionary Holistic Healing infuses mind-body practices into the therapeutic process to help clients explore healing beyond traditional psychotherapeutic talk-therapy. Our mission is to emphasize the importance of integrating psychotherapy with movement, music, aromatherapy, artworks, nature, and breath work to establish equilibrium; therein, inviting the body to join the mind in its establishment of therapeutic attunement. We view each person as a whole being made up of many parts working in concert with one another to fully embrace the evolutionary progression of healing. We believe that a person is not defined by their condition; but rather, that individuals can achieve good health by strengthening their emotional, physical, social and mental wellness. We strive to mindfully stand in the entire experience of being human. It is then we can whole-heartedly step into the power of self-awareness, self-empowerment, and self-love.

I appreciate the time you are taking to choose the best person and process for your specific needs. Being a college student requires a lot of difficult choices, and I know finding a counselor can be hard as well. Here are some thoughts about how I work, but please contact me if you have other questions. My goal as a counselor is to shape our work around the needs, goals, and overall direction you want to take in your life. If you have very focused, concrete issues you want to address, we’ll use a solution-focused approach to create plans and strategies for focused change and growth. If you have more broad, complicated things to address, we talk about a deeper purpose and meaning for your life that can serve as a foundation for more significant changes. No matter what you would like to talk about in counseling, we will capitalize on your strengths as a whole person to create the change you seek.
