Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Therapy works by creating an open and non-judgmental environment for clients to begin reflecting on their experiences. By bringing an authentic and empathic approach to therapy, Peter helps clients explore and access parts of themselves that they may have been closed off to in the past. By exploring past experiences and working creating positive change in the present day, therapy can help increase a client’s ability to navigate relationships, understand their emotions and advocate for themselves. Peter works primarily from psychodynamic and emotion-focused approaches. He believes that relationships form the core of our experiences, and as such, the therapeutic relationship is one of the greatest tools of therapy. Peter strives to bring his authentic self into the therapy space as a way of helping his clients do the same. Peter completed his internship at Fordham University's Counseling & Psychology Services, and has extensive experience working with students and young adults. He completed additional psychodynamic training at the Kull Initiative for Psychotherapy, where he continues to work as a therapist, supervisor, and Associate Clinical Director.

Thank you for reviewing my profile and see if we could be a good fit! My experience includes working with individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, self-esteem, and relationship issues. Additionally, I work with many clients dealing with career or school related stress. Prior to my work as a Mental Health Counselor, I worked in the corporate world of fashion, which gave me a deep understanding of how a fast-paced and demanding work environment can affect one’s well-being. I believe the most important factor is the relationship between myself and my clients. A genuine, trusting relationship is so critical for this work. My initial training was at Northwestern University, and was centered in a psychodynamic approach; however, I have additional training in, Mindfulness, EMDR, CBT, and IFS approaches. This allows me to pull from multiple techniques to do what is best for each client and their goals. I work collaboratively with individuals. I want to hear your input as we devise a plan on how to reach your goals. You can expect me to check in often on how you feel therapy is going, and use feedback to help modify our approach as needed. Looking forward to meeting you and seeing if we could be a good fit!

Psychotherapy can benefit people facing a range of challenges. Currently, I see adults and adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship or interpersonal difficulties, and sometimes with health/illness issues. I see many people experiencing distress and other symptoms associated with life transitions such as adolescence, marriage, new parenthood or challenges in family planning, divorce, professional or personal role redefinition, retirement, and aging. I provide counseling to individuals and couples struggling with the shifting roles and demands of these complicated times. Therapy is a collaboration. I bring a warm, curious, nonjudgmental nature, an appreciation for individual differences, spontaneity and value of humor. Together, we explore patterns, thoughts, and feelings from the past and present. Clients begin therapy not only with identified concerns but also with resources that can be harnessed for lasting change. I use an active, contemporary approach to psychotherapy. I integrate psychodynamic, relational and cognitive-behavioral models and, where appropriate, health psychology, tailoring my work to each individual and their circumstances. My goal is to help people find relief from their suffering and to discover new ways of experiencing life to its fullest.

I’ve always been a curious person. Some might call it nosy, but for me it’s about wanting to understand what makes each person unique. That curiosity began with my own story, figuring out who I am and where I come from. Growing up in an immigrant household as a biracial person brought its own challenges, and those experiences shaped my connection to this work. Mental health has always felt deeply personal to me. Having been impacted by it both directly and indirectly, I’ve learned to turn adversity into strength and purpose, and to connect with others through empathy and understanding. Think of therapy as a choose-your-own-adventure. My goal is to meet you exactly where you are at. Some sessions might be spent processing the pain of a difficult breakup, while others may focus on something lighter, like venting about a character you can’t stand in a show you’re watching. I value the open-endedness of person-centered therapy and enjoy finding creative and meaningful ways to support clients.
