Therapists for college students near New York University
You try so hard to keep the peace. You don't want to "rock the boat", and desperately want others to like you. After years of bending over backwards, your nerves are so much on edge that others have called you "too sensitive" or "overly emotional". In relationships with family, friends, partners, and coworkers, you feel powerless and plagued with doubt. Overthinking and spiraling thoughts are your new norm. But recently, you're realizing that you've been putting other people first for years, so much so, that you've forgotten to take care of yourself. That's where our work together comes in. Are you ready to learn to trust your own voice? Are you ready to shed the message that you have to please others to have happy relationships? Are you ready to stop overthinking? And most importantly, are you ready to begin taking care of yourself, the way you've been taking care of others for years? Invest in yourself and take that next step by clicking "Email Me" button or giving me a call. I offer a free phone consultation, and see clients in-person in my Oneonta Office and via telehealth anywhere in New York. I specialize in working with college students, and have experience in working with adults of all ages. I look forward to hearing from you!
I offer a collaborative, accepting, and reflective space where you can better understand yourself and what’s getting in the way of the life you want. I help people explore emotional and relational patterns with curiosity and self-compassion. Many of my clients come to me struggling with anxiety, depression, or challenges in their relationships. For some, these experiences have been present for a long time; for others, they feel new. I’m proud of the supportive environment I create, and I see it as the foundation of meaningful therapy. Our work is most effective when you feel safe enough to talk about what’s hard to say elsewhere and my primary goal is to help make that possible. My approach is grounded in the belief that real change comes through insight, self-awareness, and genuine human connection.
At the heart of psychotherapy is accompaniment through one’s inner world. Current difficulties, past struggles, individual and familial traumas, hidden hopes and dreams – all of this will be central to making sense of your present and building toward your future. Starting psychotherapy can feel intimidating, but the benefits can be huge: deeper self-understanding, more meaningful and authentic relationships, reduced depression and anxiety, increased self-confidence. I have worked with a diverse swath of undergrad and graduate students in college counseling centers, and have studied and taught at private and public universities across the country. My specializations include relationship struggles, family conflict and crisis, identity development, career direction, academic concerns, gender and sexuality, trauma, spirituality, creativity, chronic illness, immigration, and LGBTQIA+ issues in teens and adults. I am committed to meeting you where you are at in the therapeutic process, and I welcome exploration of racial, sexual, and gender identities. I am a Harvard Medical School Psychiatry fellow trained in psychodynamic, relational, cognitive behavioral, and mindfulness-based therapies, but I believe a strong sense of connection is the most important element in seeking a therapist. I encourage you to reach out to a number of practitioners to find a good match. I look forward to hearing from you.

I work with relationship issues and sexuality, certified as a Relationship Therapist through the Gottman Institute of Seattle. I also see people with other forms of neurodivergence such as ADHD. Originally I am from Boston and grew up in a working class family with a commitment to political activism. I am licensed in NY and FL as well as Oregon and Washington State. Although I offer some reduced fee spots I am sorry to say they are consistently full.

I work with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, grief, relationship concerns, and major life transitions. I view therapy as a space to explore challenges from a holistic, eclectic, and ecological perspective. I believe that supportive therapy using a cognitive behavior approach allows people to open up and try new approaches to their problems. Trauma informed care is a major component part of my practice, there are many issues that are rooted in trauma. Understanding your past helps you to face your tomorrows. I have been practicing for over 40 years and still feel passionate about helping people be everything they dream to be. Working on issues that are stopping you from feeling happiness, successful, and peaceful is my goal for you.
College is a time of huge transitions, and it’s easy to feel anxious, stressed, or unsure where you stand. If you're struggling with overwhelming worry (anxiety), feeling stuck after a tough transition (like starting school or a breakup), grappling with past trauma, or just trying to figure out challenging relationships, you've come to the right place. Your Therapy, Your Tools My practice is built on the belief that you already have what you need within you (though it may not feel like it, right now) —we just need to clear out all the noise and find and focus on what actually works for you. We'll ease your mind: We use practical, science-backed strategies to help you unhook from negative thought spirals and calm that constant feeling of being "on edge." We'll discover and heal the root causes : We'll gently explore the "parts" of you that are feeling anxious, unclear, or worn out, and use powerful processing methods to reduce the intensity of recent or past trauma or fear (like EMDR and IFS). We'll help you adjust: Whether you're dealing with the stress of major life transitions or trying to set healthier boundaries in relationships, we'll create space for you to process the change and build a stronger sense of self. We'll get you grounded: I integrate the calming power of nature-based tools (in or out of the office) to help your nervous system slow down, allowing you to find a peaceful space even when deadlines are looming. We’ll work together, at your own pace, to move you from feeling overwhelmed to thriving on campus and beyond. Ready to take a breath and start building a college experience that feels authentic and manageable? Let's connect.

I will work with you to simplify the number of medications you take to address your symptoms and optimize with 1-2 medications that work best for you.
Due to the coronavirus, my practice is telehealth only. Connecting with a laptop , ipad or phone is easy. I work best with persistent persons wanting a better quality of life. Because it can be difficult to seek help, I provide psychoeducation about therapy to clients and am forthright and supportive. Clients who are motivated to do better and want relief from school, social and family stresses can benefit from my approach to therapy. I work with a wide range of and have an understanding of the unique culture of colleges and universities. Individuals seen in my practice are generally anxious, stressed, panicky and dealing with life circumstances. I enhance skills through university teaching and professional writing. Treatment emphasizes coping and problem solving skills, which are tools used when formal therapy has ended. One should acquire the ability to see alternatives so problems become less overwhelming and more manageable. As someone who is teaching college students online, I have an understanding of the pressures and stresses that come with the logistics of navigating online instruction. The college students seen in my practice report anxieties related to multiple personal/social, academic and work demands as well as the changes in daily life due to the coronavirus
My name is Soren and I work with people of all ages to help them grow in whatever directions feel the most authentic. If you are feeling misunderstood, lost, trapped, or alone, my practice is a safe space for you. Many times we hide our deepest truths from others and even from ourselves in order to keep moving forward and not make a fuss or ignite difficult emotions. However, this denies us the chance for a more full and connected life. Life is hard, beautiful, and confusing. In my work we learn to hold space for all of these truths and explore them honestly. We are so often told what to do and who to be in this world, that we can lose sight of our intrinsic, genuine selves and desires. I help my clients move towards holistic connection with themselves and others through learning to live in more authentic and fulfilling ways. The path I take with each client is unique and matches their natural ways of healing. Each person has the ability to feel whole, valuable, and content in their lives. I like to give my clients the support and perspective that they need to fulfill this potential. I know counseling can be a challenging journey, but I am here to be a partner on that path and provide you with the warmth, understanding, joy, and safety you deserve.

Creative practices can often be a safer and more direct way of expressing, experiencing and understanding the most challenging emotions. I'm a creative arts therapist who has been working in New York for over fourteen years. I integrate my experience as a performer in Jazz, improvised and World music as well as my zen practice of over twenty years into a unique and effective approach to therapy. Using both verbal psychotherapy and creative art mediums in a safe and supportive environment I work to guide the therapeutic process towards achieving a client's unique goals. I specialize in working with clients with depression, anxiety, addiction, ASD, trauma and ADHD. I bring together psychodynamic depth and mindfulness — sometimes with music, sometimes without. My work is warm, exploratory, and grounded in who you actually are. No previous musical experience required. If you're curious whether this approach could work for you, I'd love to find out together. I work with college students and young adults who may be struggling with anxiety, stress, relationship issues, self-esteem, body image concerns, academic pressure, life transitions, loneliness, or feeling overwhelmed. Many students struggle with overthinking, comparison to others, pressure to succeed, family stress, social anxiety, or uncertainty about who they are and where they’re headed in life. My approach is warm, supportive, and nonjudgmental. I want therapy to feel like a safe place where you can talk honestly about what you’re going through while also learning practical ways to cope, manage emotions, and build confidence. Together, we can work on developing healthier coping skills, improving relationships, managing anxiety and stress, strengthening self-worth, and helping you feel more emotionally grounded and supported. Reaching out for help can feel difficult, but you do not have to figure everything out alone.
