Therapists for college students near 02155
I am a licensed educational psychologist and psychotherapist. There are times in life when you may struggle with social-emotional issues that are overwhelming. You may be dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, social stress, relational conflicts, low self-esteem, poor impulse control, trauma, or the challenges of college life. Navigating the myriad of social stressors frequently requires learning new skill sets, which at times may include further development of your Emotional Intelligence (EQ). My goal is to support you as the author of your story and create an approach that fits your unique needs. I focus on helping clients build those inner resources and when possible a network of support that help them weather the challenges in life and promote lasting change. My treatment modality is holistic and integrative. Everyone is unique and as individuals no one therapeutic style may work for everyone. I may incorporate parts of different therapeutic approaches to create a custom fit based on each client's needs.

Contending with life's daily pressures can often make it difficult to feel confident in your ability to thrive - and not just barely survive. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship issues, or other concerns, therapy is a safe space where you can engage your existing coping skills and support systems while also discovering and implementing additional strategies and resources. I genuinely believe we have the resilience necessary to make meaningful, lasting changes in our lives. I employ an integrated, systemic approach to therapy and bring humility and cultural sensitivity to every interaction. I have specific experience and interest in working with pregnant and postpartum clients, and I incorporate important concepts such as coping with life transitions, communication, and boundary-setting in my work with every client. I offer supportive, affirming therapy empowering clients to achieve satisfaction in making the changes they seek. I also bring respect and compassion to the therapeutic alliance; my active and empathic listening helps clients feel validated/understood. My goal is to be your ally as we explore your innate strengths and foster your sense of self-affirmation.
Whether you are navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, relationship challenges, or simply hoping to better understand yourself, I am here to help you reconnect with yourself and what matters most to you. I strive to create a warm and collaborative space where you feel seen and heard. I believe meaningful change happens when we feel safe enough to explore our struggles, recognize our strengths, and empower ourselves to make the changes we wish to see in our lives.
Regardless of your reasons for seeking therapy, it is vital that you feel understood and supported as you begin this process. You may be experiencing depression or anxiety, navigating a significant life transition, or feeling dissatisfied in areas of your life such as school, work, or relationships. Together, we will explore the forces that are keeping you stuck and help you cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships. Using a variety of techniques including psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral interventions, our work together will be tailored to your unique needs. My therapeutic approach is characterized by warmth, curiosity, and flexibility. I have postgraduate training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, CBT, and DBT. My past work experiences have included the Outpatient Trauma Clinic at McLean, the Outpatient Psychiatry Department at MGH, and the Psychiatry Department at New York Presbyterian. Finding the right fit between patient and therapist is important, so I offer a free phone consultation to help us determine if working together feels right. My approach is mindful and person-centered, with an emphasis on meeting you where you are. I strive to create a space where you can express yourself freely and feel understood.
With over 30 years of experience, we will work together collaboratively on your goal of feeling better. Whether it's stress, academic stress, roommate or relationship issues, anxiety, or family of origin issues, together we will work toward your goal of living a more contented, fulfilling life. I have extensive experience working with college and grad students in the Boston area.
College can feel like a mix of excitement and pressure all at once. Between academics, relationships, figuring out who you are, and trying to keep up with everything, it’s really easy to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or like you’re just barely holding it together. In therapy, I try to create a space where you don’t have to have it all figured out. We slow things down, make sense of what’s going on, and work together to find ways to feel more grounded and more like yourself again. I really believe people already have strengths in them, even if it doesn’t feel accessible in the moment. My job is to help you reconnect with those strengths and figure out how to use them in real life, especially during stressful or confusing seasons. I work with college students and adults navigating anxiety, depression, relationship stress, trauma, and big life transitions. I use approaches like CBT, mindfulness, and body-based (somatic) work to help you understand what you’re feeling and actually shift it in a practical, supportive way. My fee for a 50-minute session is $180. I also offer a limited number of sliding scale spots ($90–$100) to help make therapy more accessible.

Do you have a place where you can be truly heard? Therapy can be that safe, accepting place and that's what I strive to create with you: somewhere for you to bring whatever it is that you're struggling with or the stuff that feels too heavy to bear alone. Maybe your challenges are preventing you from enjoying satisfaction and contentment. Perhaps you are in a period of transition and therapy could be a space to think through decisions so you can feel more confident about your choices. Or maybe you're struggling in a relationship to overcome old patterns that have limited you until now. The good news is that you don't have to face any of this alone. I have accompanied people through these and many other issues, and in therapy we'll identify what is holding you back and help you pick up new tools to tackle these challenges. I have experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, and specialize in working with the LGBTQIA+ community. Contact me today to find out whether we're a good fit to work together!
Welcome, First of all, be sure to take a deep breath and know that whether you choose to work with me or someone else you will get through this process! Choosing a therapist is not an easy task. I look forward to setting up a time to speak with you after you review my clinical background and training. Most college students appreciate the sense of humor and warmth that I bring to our discussions. They feel connected and engaged with a real person who cares about them in a personal way. They also appreciate my ability to help them identify practical solutions to the academic and emotional issues that they voice in our meetings. My wide range of clinical experiences allow me to help my patients move through treatment with a sense of energy and a feeling that their strengths are both appreciated and enhanced throughout the treatment process. This close relationship allows them to open-up and identify a pathway forward in their life that is meaningful, clear, and solid. To provide you with some background I would note that I am a licensed psychologist who has worked with college students for years. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, college transition stress, social skill challenges and anger management. I also help students who need specialized support in managing the organizational, writing, or academic demands of a college environment. I meet with students in individual, group, and family therapy sessions depending on the need. I also support students and their families in situations where they are stepping down from a stay in an in-patient hospital or are trying to avoid a hospitalization. My approach to treatment is holistic in that I use a range of time-tested treatment interventions to identify and address your needs in a personalized manner. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about my approach to treatment in our first phone contact. I maintain an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School and serve as a Clinical Associate at McLean Hospital, the medical school's largest teaching psychiatric hospital. I have supervised numerous psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists over the course of my career and as such I am the Director of Training in my group practice, and I am currently training five psychology graduate students. Please feel free to email me at Perna@hms.harvard.edu or call me at 617-431-1441 in order to answer your questions. My practice is based in Lexington, MA, where I provide both in-person and virtual treatment. I specialize in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, typically meeting more frequently to support deeper work. Therapy begins by reflecting on your experiences, with an effort to understand them rather than judge them. I take a compassionate approach to exploring your problems, your desire for change, and your difficulties in making changes. Through better understanding your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relationships, it may become possible to make more informed and meaningful choices. I am collaborative and flexible in my approach, looking for ways to work well together. I provide brief consultations for those seeking help thinking through specific challenges, gaining a professional perspective, or developing strategies for change. When people are struggling in their attempts to do things differently, I aim to help figure out what is getting in their way, a process that can take time but often leads to greater clarity. A therapeutic relationship with someone you trust can be an important path toward self-understanding and emotional relief. Because therapy is a deeply personal experience, it's important to find a therapist you feel comfortable working with. I welcome you to contact me if you're curious to see if this might be a good fit.
Welcome! Working with a diverse population for many years widen my appreciation toward everyone I encounter in the therapy room. My new clients often ask me, “What is your approach or therapy model?” Learning from years valuable experience, I do not take a blueprint or “one-size-fits-all” approach for clients. Every client has an individualized curriculum. You may be feeling distressed, facing difficulties in your personal or professional relationships, contemplating a major life transition, or navigating a health crisis. No matter what challenge brings, I will help you in resolving conflicts and strengthening your relationships. I will explore your options in a collaborative way while taking into consideration the hopes, expectations, values, and preferences that are significant to you. Using clinical sophistication and expertise I incorporate humility, kindness, and passion to create a caring environment. My life experience encompasses living in the Eastern hemisphere and Western hemisphere; also working in East coast and West coast of the U.S. It enriches me to carefully examine things in different angles and not “boxing people in” with narrowly defined categories. I also provide supervision for all learning stages. I look forward to meeting you!
