I specialize in working with anxiety disorders, self-esteem, and personality disorders; I also have the unique niche of working researchers/academics as well as those who have lived abroad. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked as a researcher at Harvard Medical School, University of Pennsylvania, and as a Fulbright scholar in Budapest, Hungary, studying psychotherapeutic interventions for anxiety disorders and personality disorders. My work has resulted in 20+ publications in research journals and popular science magazines. Having lived in Europe for several years, I deeply understand bi-cultural and cross-cultural challenges. My background as an academic researcher also has shaped my approach, allowing me to connect with and support clients from diverse backgrounds in a meaningful way! I offer a warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental space where clients can feel truly heard and understood. My name is Elizabeth Barley. I am dual-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I have experience working in an inpatient caring for children and adults. I also have other various areas that I have worked in from the hospital setting, home health, and palliative/hospice care. I received both my Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatrist Nurse Practitioner degrees from Purdue Global University. While attending school I worked at an inpatient mental health clinic and worked remotely as a family nurse practitioner. My focus is on the treatment of depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other chronic mental health illnesses through psychiatric assessment, medication management,t, and brief psychotherapeutic intervention. I believe in creating an individualized plan of care that values client involvement, interprofessional collaboration, and evidenced-based practice. My goal for my clients is to feel empowered to treat their illnesses through supportive education in a safe environment. A client can expect their initial visit to include a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, determination of treatment goals and education about diagnosis and available treatment options. I have the pleasure of working alongside many skilled and experienced clinicians and am happy to collaborate and coordinate care with them when appropriate to the clients’ needs.
I work with college students who are adjusting to the transition and stressors of academic life. I enjoy working with college students who need support around balancing academic and athletics. I also work with students who are dealing with family and relationship (friendship or romantic) conflict.
I believe finding the right therapist is a major part of successful therapy. I love to work with individuals and couples in a solution focused way where I can support them as well as provide feedback and tools to help navigate towards each person's personal goals. I love to engage with people during sessions and to make sure that they feel comfortable being their authentic selves without any reservations or fear of judgement. I have a wide range of experience in a variety of mental health concerns and especially love working with people managing the stressors of any relationships, dating, marriage, anxiety, life changes and life adjustments. I want to make sure that anyone who sees me feels they are benefiting from therapy and working towards a better quality of life.

Do you find yourself stuck or pained in relationships - with yourself, others, the world, or your past? The struggle may show up as loneliness, emptiness, maladaptive interpersonal patterns, or as symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, disordered eating etc. I strive to create trust in a nonjudgmental and authentic atmosphere, from where we work together to understand and help resolve your struggles. My style in session is warm, collaborative, and actively engaged. I'm not a passive listener who nods along silently—I'm present with you, noticing what's happening in the room, gently drawing attention to patterns, emotions, and moments that matter, including the ones you might be inclined to gloss over. Sometimes our work is more experiential—slowing down to sit with what's emerging rather than rushing past it. Other times it's more practical and action-oriented—working on concrete strategies, trying new behaviors, or building skills you can use between sessions. I blend insight-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and emotion-focused approaches in individualized ways that fit who you are and what you're working through. I bring extensive experience across college counseling centers and mental health clinics, having most recently served as a staff psychologist at Harvard University Health Services, and previously at Case Western Reserve University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Northwestern University (where I completed my postdoctoral fellowship). I am now in full-time private practice. I'm also the Chinese translator of Irvin Yalom's Existential Psychotherapy and The Gift of Therapy, and serve on the Expert Committee at Jiandanxinli (简单心理), the largest therapist platform in China.
