Life continually brings new challenges and successes to us: life events and circumstances that can contribute to periods of serious distress – but also potentially meaningful personal growth. This can certainly apply to those who are on a path toward achieving a degree - adjusting to new things: a degree program, city, roommates, & even ways of learning (including online classes & COVID-sensitive campus life). This also can be a time in life when past challenges can crop up again - vestiges of trauma, social anxieties, family of origin issues, etc. In addition to doing traditional talk therapy, I also conduct mind-body skills groups in which we practice in a small group setting a nice overview of techniques that can help you cope with just about anything: meditation, guided imagery, mindfulness, relaxation, etc. I incorporate these into our individual work, too, but I often recommend one of these 6-week groups to lay the foundation. Past clients have described me as someone who really listened and conveyed sincere concern, but who was also not afraid to say what they needed to hear. If you work with me, I will partner with you to identify your strengths and to empower you along the way to greater insight. We will always look for hope and positivity even when they may be hard to find. In addition to traditional talk therapy, I love using non-traditional methods such as listening to music, reading poetry, even being silly when we could use a laugh.

Accepting Clients! - Hi, I'm Julie, a queer mental health professional with over a decade of experience working with adolescents and young adults! I have endured my own journeys with anxiety and depression, and I am passionate about helping others through similar struggles. I specialize in therapy for teens and young adults (age 14-30) who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions (such as adjusting to life during or after college), life-stress, LGBTQ+-related topics, and trying to achieve greater self-understanding. I believe EVERYONE can benefit from therapy, regardless of diagnosis, and provide a safe space for clients to explore whatever it is that is troubling them. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am dedicated to promoting diversity and creating a safe space for people of all backgrounds where YOU are the expert on your own individual experiences. Together, you and I will set goals, consider tools, and delve into the self-understanding necessary to help you achieve your desired outcomes. I integrate techniques from Narrative Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients navigate various life experiences and challenges. I operate from a feminist lens which considers both the individual struggle and the larger societal context in which it occurs. I have worked in a variety of settings including schools, mental health treatment centers, and nonprofit organizations. If you are seeking therapy, please email me for a FREE 15-minute consultation! I am currently accepting clients for weekday evenings!
I work with folks to navigate challenges with life transitions, self-image, relationships, anxiety, stress management, trauma, grief, perfectionism, and burnout.

I believe in the power of my clients to make positive changes in their lives once they gain the necessary insight and skills in our sessions. As a therapist, I seek to empower clients as they explore, express and honor their truth. I draw from humanistic and multicultural frameworks to gain a better understanding of clients’ experiences. To respect the diversity in my clients’ needs, the interventions I use follow an integrative approach, including: interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness-based methods. I have several years clinical experience working in university mental health settings, and thus have a strong skill-set in supporting the concerns of undergraduate, graduate students and young professionals. I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, mood, relationship concerns, identity development, and life transitions. I also have expertise in addressing concerns related to international and immigrant identities (especially Arab, Middle Eastern, and North African individuals). Whether you're feeling inundated by challenging life experiences, navigating life transitions, or struggling with a relationship that's depleting your personal resources, I welcome the opportunity to work with you. You don't have to figure this out on your own. The fundamental value of therapy is being able to speak with an empathic person about what is happening in your life. It is an opportunity to be heard and recognized in the midst of whatever is occurring for you. Believing that within you is the capacity to create contentment and growth, is at the heart of personal change. With empathic support and understanding comes the opportunity to develop insight around your perceptions of yourself and the world. As an Integrative Psychotherapist, I employ a range of approaches based on your personal style and needs. If you're considering therapy but not sure whether it's for you, I invite you to call me for a free consultation. My office is located steps from Dupont Circle Metro. I congratulate your courage to reach out for help and look forward to accompanying you on this journey.
The transition to college or graduate school can be a time of tremendous change. Adapting to new environments, relationships and levels of independence can feel overwhelming in even the best of circumstances. For those who are navigating mental health challenges, complicated family or friend dynamics, shifts in identity, grief, or loss, that transition can generate feelings of anxiety, panic or paralysis that may affect daily functioning. I was a client long before I became a therapist, so I know how daunting it can be to open yourself up to a stranger – to let them see those private parts of yourself that might have been a source of judgment, fear, pain or shame. It took me many years to ask for help, in part because I viewed it as a sign of weakness. Now, through the lens of both my professional and lived experiences, I see this first step you are taking for what it is – one of the ultimate signs of strength. I honor the courage it took to access that strength. I can’t guarantee that the work ahead will be easy – but you won’t have to do it alone. My goal as a therapist is to meet you where you are and walk with you as you move toward where you want to be. I strive to create a therapeutic space that is authentic, safe and non-judgmental. My approach to our work together is relationship-based and trauma-informed. I believe that therapy is most effective when the connection between client and therapist is grounded in trust and compassion. I invite you to reach out so that we can explore, together, whether I might be the right person to join you on your journey toward new insights, self-awareness and growth. Please note that discounts are available to full-time students on a case-by-case basis.

College life comes with a lot—academic stress, relationships, family pressure, and figuring out your future. For many young women and girls, these transitions can bring up anxiety, self-doubt, or feeling like you’re not enough. I specialize in working with young adult women who are navigating trauma, burnout, and big life changes. Using EMDR and CBT, I help you process past experiences, break free from negative thought patterns, and build confidence in who you are. My goal is to create a space where you feel heard, validated, and empowered to show up as your most authentic self.
I have a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Boston College and prior to working in private practice, I worked almost exclusively in university counseling centers for several years. The centerpiece of my work is building a therapeutic relationship in which you can explore and better understand yourself without fear of judgment, essentially "rewiring" your brain so that confidence and self-acceptance come to feel more like second nature to you. In the meantime, we can also build skills to better cope with anxiety, depression, and other symptoms.
